Ep. 169 — Serve the Lord With Gladness + ”They Rode Upon the Camels”
And They Rode Upon the Camels.
Oh, my word!
These are the sorts of treasures and nuggets from the word of God that I love. “And the servant ran to meet her and said, ‘Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.’ And she said, ‘Drink, my lord.’ And she hasted and let down her pitcher from her hand and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. And she hasted and emptied her pitcher into the trough and ran again under the well to draw water and drew for all his camels.”
Wow! To have a heart like that, a willing heart to serve and go the extra mile. Pastor talked about this briefly in a sermon a few weeks ago and it has flitted through my mind sporadically since then.
He talked about how serving water to camels is no small task and how Abraham's servant was specifically looking for a “two-mile girl.” This morning, as I read through the story. After the servant goes to Laban's house and asks for Rebecca's hand and is heading home with the bride for “Isaac, this little line jumped off the page,
“…and Rebecca arose and her damsels and they rode upon the camels.”
Rebecca had no idea that the camels she watered so willingly and voluntarily would be the very vehicle that would take her to her destiny.
She had no clue that the water she drew and poured out would literally be the fuel that would carry her into her future. We must never underestimate the power of serving. It was literally her acts of kind, above-and-beyond service that saw her scripted into the bloodline of Jesus.
Her serving allowed her to be the one who married Abraham's promise. She didn't do it so that the story would unfold that way. She just did it because it was in her heart to serve and God rewarded her for her kindness.
This reminds me of Matthew 10:42: “And whosoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” Jesus stated that the giving of even a cup of refreshment to a little one would be rewarded.
No act “of service goes unnoticed with Jesus. We do not serve to be seen, for then the being seen is our reward. We serve simply for the joy of serving, and He rewards.
We have no way of knowing what the reward will be, but He will always reward. Rebecca did not know that the vessels of water she emptied for Isaac's servants' camels would literally pave the pathway to her future and her legacy.
Keep watering those camels.
